There are
many questions the students and people who is coming to Bucharest did to me, so
I made this post to help to solve your doubts.

- How to arrive to the city from the airport?

There are
two options. You can take a taxi or come by bus.

To take a
taxi, just when you go to the arrival’s hall, you’ll see a machine to order the
taxi. You have to keep the receipt that the machine will give to you and show
it to you taxi (the driver will ask). Of course, get the cheap taxi, 1.39
lei/kms. To go to the city center is around 50 lei (around 10€). Never take a
taxi without ordering it.

The bus.
Much cheaper. Go outside (downstairs!) the arrival’s hall, and buy a ticket to
the city (at this bus usually are controllers during the day!). The ticket to
the city (2 ways) is 7 lei.

There are 2
buses. 738 and 780. The first one go through the center until Unirii square.
The second one go to Gara de Nord (train station, not very recommendable area
during the night). The trip to the center will take around 40 minutes.

The bus works 24 hours, so don't worry about the time you'll arrive!

- How I move around the city? How much cost the
monthly pass for the metro?

The easiest
way to move around in Bucharest is metro and bus! You can buy the pass card for
only 50 lei, if you have a student card, will cost the half. Don’t forget to
validate the card at the buses!

There are
some other kind of metro pass, like the 64-trips card (20 lei). You should
check which one is better for you.

Also, the
taxi is very cheap here! But be careful and take the taxis which have written
in the door 1.69 LEI/KM. Also, never accept the taxi if when you say the
address where you want to go, the driver say you a fixed price. It’s a scam.
Make sure always are using the taximeter!

- Cheap places to stay until I find my own
flat?

If you’re
student and your university have a residence, probably this is the cheapest
option! Book the residence for the first month, then, when you arrive here,
you’ll have one month to look for flat from the “commodity” of you residence.
Usually they are very cheap!

Bucharest
have a big offer in hostels, personally, I recommend this ones, “Wonderland
Hostel” and “X Hostel” for the price and location!

- How to look for an apartment?

This is the
BIG question. I suggest you to start to check this webpages. Anuntul and
CautColeg. You can check also the Erasmus facebook group! Many owners and
agencies publish there the apartments they have, and also other students are
asking for flat mates, and some of them might have already the flat!

You should
realize that in Romania, when we say that an apartment have 3 rooms, we are
saying that have 2 bedrooms, and one living!! We count the living as one more
room ;)

Be patient,
and be ready to see many awful flats. But really, disgusting. The flats in
Bucharest are quite old, and in the center is normal to find a flat built 60
years ago! Also, not many flats have been renewed, that means that many times
they are now exactly how they have been built, even with the same furniture…!

The prices
are very different according to the area where you’re looking for. If you look
for an apartment 3 rooms (2 bedrooms, remember!!), in the center (piata Unirii,
piata Universiate, piata Romana), is around 500€/month.

A studio
(garsoniera, in romanian), in the same area will cost around 250€.

- How much cost the phone by month?

As in every
country, the phone companies have many tariffs, but here is very cheap. The
most used company in Romania are Vodafone and Orange.

For
example, Vodafone have this tariff (the one I have).

9€/month.
3000 minutes and 3000 sms to Vodafone, 200 minutes for international/national
(other companies), and 200 sms to other companies. Also, 300 MB.

Usually
it’s enough for me.

You can buy
the cards in the kiosks on the streets, also in some vending machines.
Before coming to Romania, i was the first person in the world who didn't expect NOTHING there. Only gipsyes and bad people. A very poor country. And then... how wrong i was!

I landed in Romania on 29th june 2013. I was excited, many new experiences and people was about to come to my life, but at the same time i was a bit scared, was my first time living abroad, and was going to be in a country with very bad reputation in all the world, specially in west Europe (spain...!!).

After 2 weeks in the city, is discovered that all the stereotypes where not right. Actually, only few (but really few!) stereotypes are right about Bucharest and Romania in general.

First of all, yes, Romania is a poor country. Romania didn't had the time to develop after Ceaucescu (if you don't now what or who Ceaucescu is, i order you to google it!) era. This time just finnished 20 years ago, and Romania have been almost always a poor country.
So, this is the first right stereotypes about romania. And is a very big topic.

But the people is HAPPY in Romania. They are "poor", they always have been poor, but they DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT IT! This is the difference with Spain, for example. The economical situation in Spain is horrible, and the people is always complaing.. because we are not used to it. Romanians are used to live with a very little money, they would like to have more (of course!) but they are ok with that. They know someday the economical situation there will be much better.

Second, Bucharest.. what you will do there? Is there something to do?
Of course it is! The question is, what i can't do in Bucharest? (Ok, you can't go to the seaside! hehe)
This city have everything you need. Museums (not the bests in europe, right, but some of them are very interesting), parks, shopping areas, nice people, clubs, restaurants, bars, small-cute cafes, amazing architecture, magical libraries and wonderful terraces.
This city is alive, it change everyday. You can easily discover new places everyday, even if you're born in Bucharest or you spent 11 months here. There are too many places to visit!

I know Bucharest doesn't sound exciting for the foreigners. I know it because it wasn't for me, and wasn't for all the people who i met all around europe during this 11 months.
Everybody, really, EVERYBODY, said the same:
- But, there's full of gipsyes. Aren't you affraid?
- Wow, when you said Romania i felt bad for you... i'm sure you want to move to other place.
- There's party?
- Isn't a very ugly and destroyed city?
- What about the language? Someone speak english?

And they broke my heart every time. Really. People, try to be more open minded... Be brave and try to discover places where not 90% of europeans have been. You'll be very surprised!!

And if there's something more sad than a foreigner (who have never been in Romania) talking bad about the country... is hearing a romanian talking bad about the country.
I can understand is different to live in this country for some time, than to live forever. That happens everywhere. They really don't appreciate the beautiful things they have, and that's very sad.
Today i posted something on my facebook:

Translated:

I've been a week and a half out of Bucharest, and Bucharest, I miss you!
Greece is very beautiful, but Bucharest is Bucharest, I have my heart there!
Every time people ask me where I live and I say "Bucharest", I see the fearon this face... why? I ask why that face, Bucharest is a very "nice"* city, like Romania.
Romania, Bucharest, I love you very much!
** I know Bucharest is not the most beautiful city in the world, but it is beautiful and very special.

And then.. some romanians messaged me saying thank you. And some of them even said i open their eyes, and they will start to see the good side of Bucharest.. and nothing can make me happy to hear this.

I know, Romania have a lot to improve, to change... but, i love the way the things are moving!
I'm not romanian, but i'm very happy here, with the people and the city. I can't say (almost) bad words for Bucharest. Of course every city have a bad side... or do you think London, Paris or New York are only the touristic-nice side? The cities are much more than that, and i invite everybody to discover the real Romania. You'll be surprised, trust me.

*This is my opinion, and this is what i think about the country. I know many people will not be agree with me. And also many people will be completely agree with this...Carles Solaneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13769691628054892017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3244056803006862442.post-31855533919097460682014-03-21T04:42:00.003-07:002014-03-21T07:07:43.853-07:00Visita obligada (parte II) // Must-see places (part II)Para celebrar que ya llevo almost 9 meses en Bucarest, hoy os traigo la segunda parte de lugares imprescindibles que visitar!

Keep in mind that the roads are generally not in very good condition, and that Romania has many mountains, making the even longer distances than they really are!
The main means of transport is the train, though the railway system in Romania is very outdated and very slow, but connecting the major cities. Moreover, we have the bus, which cover all the coutry, also the most remote villages. Generally it is cheaper and faster than the train, but you don't expect to save much time compared to the train, because as I mentioned earlier, the state of the roads is bad, and also the lack of highways...
ENGLISH VERSION

Before starting this adventure i used to think that my time in Bucharest would be eternal, that would feel 12 months like some years.
And I couldn’t be more wrong! After 7 months here, I realized that the time flies, it slips through my fingers.
It’s been 7 months since I came here, and I still have too many things to do, places to discover and people to enjoy… It seems like was yesterday when I came here with my luggage full of dreams.
I always thought that it will be difficult to adapt to a new place, this city would treat me like a stranger, one more visitor, but the truth is I feel this city like my home.

I never grew up, learnt, travelled and/or experienced much in such a small time, this (and more) is what Romania give me day by day.Carles Solaneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13769691628054892017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3244056803006862442.post-91372844216518269302013-10-08T13:03:00.001-07:002013-10-17T04:48:22.348-07:00El tiempo vuela // Time flies

**ENGLISH VERSION, DOWN!**

**ENGLISH VERSION**

And why I say this? Because I've been here three months!
I feel really adapted to the city. Obviously there are things that i don't understand, but I like to feel a little bit stranger here!
Everyday i meet new places, full of charm. This city is full of small cafes, hidden from the tourists, and very charming.

This month i've been busy, erasmus just have arrived and have hosted some in my house, picked them up at the airport, helping them to look for apartments, showing the city ...

Best of all? I realised that after 3 months living here, i can understand and speak Romanian (obviously novery fluently, because of my limited vocabulary... ), some days ago i had a conversation entirely in Romanian, by phone, with a person who did not know (and therefore was not used to his voice/accent). After this conversation i really felt I 'm learning more than expected, and I am very proud of myself. I never thought I would be able to speak and/or understand Romanian in just 3 months!

Here the fall didn't stop, we've arrived at 2° C. The romanians said that it isn't usual at this time, it's just some days... Well , the truth is that soon the temperatures will drop again, and here I 'm already in coat and scarf, in early October! Crazy!

I 'll let some pictures of the city, i hope you enjoy them!

Take care,

He viajado, he cumplido años, he celebrado, he discutido...

Empezamos a hacer atutostop.

Yes , two months ...
And this has been more intense than the first , if it's possible.
I traveled, I celebrated my birthday, I had discussions ...

But let's start fom the beggining!
On August 9 , Eliise and I started our first big adventure in Romania. We did atutostop for first time. It was incredible to see how the cars stopped us without asking anything in return , and after 9 hours and a car accident ( yeah. ..) , we arrived to Arad (north of Romania , near the border with Serbia and Hungary ) !
We spent four days surrounded by volunteers, also we visited Timisoara, it's a beautiful city, but we found it a bit boring .

After spending the day in Timisoara , we came back Arad and celebrated my birthday surrounded by many volunteers! ( and eliise prepared a special cake chocolate, banana, peach , and yogurt!) . Anyway, the party was hilarious , and it was a real pleasure to celebrate my birthday there, surrounded by such good people .

And then what happened?
Well we decided to go to Belgrade! This part of the trip was the most complicated, because in Serbia was a little bit complicated to take cars, but step by step, village after village, we reached Belgrade. Finally, one of my dreams come true!

Without any doubt, this was the best part of the trip . Belgrade is a wonderful city! And it's impressive to cross the River Danube, and grab a beer from the top of the fort watching the river at night , as we heard the music from BeerFest.
Belgrade is a magical city, and hope to return soon, with more time to visit the city and enjoy.

There i reconnected with old friends, and new acquaintances. We made new friends, and dreamed of living there (because yes, it's a city I 've fallen in love!) .

After two days, we started to back to Bucharest. Travel was... Long, yes. We take only three cars to get home, if we consider that one was a caravan, a Hungarian-Romanian family who were screaming for everything, and the velocity was70/80 km/hour...

Once at home, even with fatigue in the body... i celebrated my birthday again, this time with those around me every day.
The initial idea was a Rocky Horror themed party... but eventually became a transvestite party. It was an epic party, and that will remain in the memory of all my guests .

And to end the month ... an unexpected trip to Bulgaria where i visited Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo, both cities seemed lovely, but personally i prefer Plovdiv and its old town.

As you see, has been a hectic month !

See you soon,

A month ago, some day ike today (29h) I arrived in Bucharest. The truth is that I have the feeling that much more time has passed, but no, just a month.

The first few weeks have been a bit chaotic. We have not begun to work as such, because we have the office (amazing!) from only a week ago, do not have Internet at home (which, at least for me, is a problem because I've also been without phone and internet is the only way to communicate with my friends and family...), at first cohabitation is a little difficult because you do not know the character of others, but little by little we get to know better, and the truth that Elise and Luigi and have become good friends to me.

How is Bucharest? It is a city half done... everywhere is full of easily solvable damage, but here seem not to care. Thousands and thousands of cables hanging everywhere, is its hallmark.

Transport services are excellent and varied (metro, bus, tram, trolleybus and bus night), cover a very large part of the city and also have very good schedules and better prices.

Supermarket prices are the same as Spain, approximately. Some things a bit more expensive, and sometimes a little cheaper, but the final shopping list becomes equal to (but also depends on the supermarket where you buy).

Moreover, Bucharest has a wide cultural and leisure activities, at least in summer is common to find festivals every week, outdoors, with free access. And there are many museums to a very affordable price, even more if you are a student.

Also, if you like architecture, Bucharest has a variety of architectural styles. Although there are many abandoned houses or half in ruins. It is a shame that some impressive buildings left in such a sorry state. Someone told me that is in part because so slow bureaucracy in this country. To restore a house you have to ask lots of permits, which take a long time, and in addition, restoration costs big money, so not many people can afford it and end up leaving the house in ruins.

Another thing that attracts the attention of the city, is the thousands stalls selling covrigi, a kind of German pretzel. You can find them everywhere, even in the subway stations. It is the favorite snack of Romanians! Normally, workers here have no time to eat, as in Spain or other countries. Have only a little time (10-20 minutes) to eat something and rest, then use these breaks to eat a covrigi (or two!). The best thing is its price covrigi and variety, but usually cost 2.5 RON, on some sites cost or 3 RON 1 RON. They come with salt and poppy seeds, stuffed with cherry, chocolate, cheese and of course, no padding.

In conclusion, I am beginning to understand the city and its people, and although far from the city of my dreams, I'm happy to be here and to be living this adventure with my new friends / family!

Carles S.

ENGLISH VERSION

13 days since i arrived to Bucharest, and now i'm getting a idea of how the things works here.

Finally, all the flatmates are together, Eliise, Luigi, Ekrem and Joseph/Yusuf, so now begins definitely our volunteering!

We get a bank account here and a romanian sim card (with an INCREDIBLE rate!)

Actually, is getting hard for me not think in euros, it's strange to to the stores and se that trousers cost 80/90 lei...

Seems so much, truth? As they are about 20€!

For example, i want to buy meat. 20 lei. WOW, SO EXPENSIVE!!! After that shock, i think in euros.. and it's just 5€!

More curiosities? The NOTES! It's one of the weirdest thing i've ever seen, are made by plastic, literally.

You can wet them, and nothing happens, it's very useful! haha

Moreovert, the value of the notes is ridiculous!

They have notes of 1 lei (€ 0.20), 5 lei (€ 1.10), 10 lei (€ 2.20) 50 (11.30 €) and 100 (22.7 €). There are also 200 and 500, I think, but I have not seen yet.

It's funny when you get 150 lei and your wallet is almost exploding, so full of notes... but you just have 35€!

They also have coins... but this value is almost inexistent! Coins of 50 bani, 10 bani, 5 bani, 1 bani. Its value? 0.11 cents, 0.02 cents, 0.01 cents and .. zero? Its value is very negligible that many banks don't expedite them, and in many bars/restaurants you're not allowed to pay with the coins!

More curiosities? Taxis! They're very extremely cheap! The rate is 1.39lei/km (about 30 cents/km. For example, take the bus from Piata Unirii (centre of the city) to my house (around 6 kms), cost around 10 lei (like 2.2€!!).

Also the public transport is very cheap, the mensual subscription for all lines of the city (metro, tram, bus and trolley) costs 50 lei (€ 11.5), and if you are a student, 25 lei (less than 7 euros).

Well, that's all for today! Soon I will upload some video!

Además, ya he llegado a mi piso.

Finally i'm here, in Bucharest!
I arrived two days ago, in the middle of the night, was raining. The truth, the weather was horrible, but Silvia, from my organization, came to the airport to pick me up and she took me to the house of some spanish volunteers (Thanks Julian and Maria for hosting me!) where i spent the first two nights.

Yesterday, finally, i went to see the city, the temperature was very good :)
I was very surprised, for good reasons, about the city. Its a beautiful city, with a lot of parks, gardens and green areas.

The "negative" part? The streets are in pretty bad shape, that shows that they are very old, and haven't spent much money on them again...
Also, it's full of wild dogs, but FULL... incredible.

First impressions are very good, nice people and nice buildings but very sloppy...

Besides, finally i'm on my floor! It's quite old, but renovated, two bathrooms, spacious kitchen and large living room. I can't be happier!! We still lack many things, cooking utensils, hangers, things for clean...

There you can see some pictures that i took from the city.

See you soon,

I don't assimilated yet that i've been selected to do my EVS in Bucharest, Romania.

1st of July i'll start my new life there, and now in my head i've a lot of questions and insecurities.

I decided to create this blog to show to my family and friends how's going on my life in Romania... and also, i don't need to talk about the same history twice :P

My departure is very far, but i'm thinking in what i've to buy before leaving (warm clothes! because the winter there is like -10 degrees!!!)

So, welcome, see you soon.
